Where to stay in Japan?
From futuristic capsule hotels to traditional Ryokans, accommodation is an adventure itself. Warning: prices are often “per person,” not “per room.”
Explore OptionsCulture Shock: In Japan, a standard hotel room is purely functional (and tiny!), while a Ryokan is a destination in its own right. Your accommodation strategy can triple your budget—or save it. Here is the breakdown.
Traditional Ryokan
More than a hotel, it’s a dive into ancient Japan. Tatami floors, futons, hot springs (Onsen), and a gastronomic dinner (Kaiseki) served in your room.
Advice: It is expensive. Plan for 1 or 2 nights max during your trip (e.g., in Hakone or Miyajima) to experience the magic without breaking the bank.
Business Hotels
Japanese efficiency. Chains like APA, Toyoko Inn, or Dormy Inn offer spotless, well-located, but often tiny rooms (11-14m²).
Bonus: Pajamas, toothbrush, and razors are always provided.
Hostels & Capsules
Forget the clichés. Japanese Hostels are modern, quiet, and ultra-clean. Capsule Hotels are fun to try for one night (Sci-Fi vibe), but hostels are better for socializing.
Love Hotels
Don’t judge by the name! Huge rooms, jacuzzi, karaoke… affordable luxury for couples.
Note: Usually 18+ only. Great value for money.
Airbnb / Rentals
Often the only viable economic option for families or groups of 4+. Strict rules apply (garbage sorting, silence).
Understanding Room Sizes
Real estate is expensive in Japan. Don’t be surprised:
• 11-13 m²: “Semi-Double” Hotel Room (Tight fit for 2 suitcases).
• 20 m² +: Considered “Luxury” in standard hotels, but standard in Love Hotels.
• Tatami (Jō): Traditional unit of measurement (≈ 1.6 m²).
