Shinkansen & JR Pass
The Japanese rail network is punctual to the second. It is the most comfortable way to link major cities (Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima).
The Reality Check: Since the massive 70% price hike in Oct 2023, the National JR Pass is rarely cost-effective for classic itineraries. Smart travelers now switch to Regional Passes or single tickets.
Domestic Flights
Often cheaper and faster than the train for long distances (e.g., Tokyo to Fukuoka, Sapporo, or Okinawa).
Look for LCCs (Low-Cost Carriers) like Peach Aviation, Jetstar, and Skymark.
Subways & IC Cards
Never buy individual paper tickets. The Suica, Pasmo, or ICOCA card is essential.

Renting a Car
